Red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii / Eucheuma cottonii) is a marine macroalga belonging to the Rhodophyta division. It is widely cultivated in tropical coastal waters, particularly in Southeast Asia, for its high content of carrageenan and other valuable bioactive compounds. Red seaweed is rich in sulfated polysaccharides, dietary fiber, vitamins (A, C, E, and B-complex), minerals (iodine, calcium, magnesium, and potassium), polyphenols, and antioxidants. These compounds contribute to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and moisturizing properties, making red seaweed an important raw material for the food, nutraceutical, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries.
